Writing

About being a designer and an idealist

“…designers are always looking to improve things. We love beauty, harmony, symmetry, and we love when things and systems work integrated in a seamless fashion. I wanted to design, to help bring order and beauty to the world around me.”

Why I design

“The sense of joy upon seeing a person using a product you designed is incredible. Even more incredible is hearing their visceral responses such as a “Wow” or, “This is cool” or, “Is this out yet? Can I use it? It will help me so much”… Hearing such words make all the hard work, the hours of ideation, mocking, wireframing, doing user research and pushing pixels seem… well, freakin’ worth it!”

3 Key UX questions to ask before (and while) designing any product

“Product managers, engineers, sales people, they all look at the designs 10 times a day. They have their own priorities. They give you feedback all the time. What about the user? You get user feedback, but I am almost 100% sure it is not nearly as much feedback as you get from everybody else. That is why it is so easy to lose focus on what the user cares about.”

Don’t let bad process or structure kill great design

“The best product managers I know allow others to influence their vision and direction for the product. The best engineers I know are flexible when building products. The best designers I know allow others to shape their design.”

What I learned in 1 year as a designer at Pocket

“Our engineers know UX. Our designers know growth hacking. Our data analytics team knows product strategy. Our community managers know code. Our partnerships team knows design thinking. You get the point. We have really talented people who are not only great at what they do, but can contribute in other areas as well. This really helps in working across functions effectively and connecting the dots on the big challenges we are working on.”

Everyday tips for designers looking to lead

There are dozens of design leadership philosophies out there and I am not trying to write yet another one. Rather I am writing practical tips that any designer can apply to their day to day work to lead through design.”
